Rent requirements

1. Valid driver’s license with more than 2 consecutive years of issued. Valid for 90 days from entry to Costa Rica.
2. A valid driver’s license. If it is not in Latin alphabet or it is a digital license, it must be presented together with the International License.
3. Physically present the identity card and / or valid passport and original, in the case of the passport must have the stamp of entry into the country.
4. Present a credit card to cover the guarantee deposit of US$1,000 (only MasterCard, VISA, Discover or American Express are accepted). The credit card must have the cardholder’s name printed on it and it must be the same person who picks up the vehicle. Deposits by Debit Card or cash are not allowed.
5. The minimum age to rent a car is 23 years old.


1. Rental period is 24 hours.
2. After 4 hours of late return, you will be charged the daily rate.
3. Vehicles cannot leave Costa Rica.
4. Additional drivers are allowed for an additional cost.
5. Cash and debit cards are accepted for deposits. 
6. Airport meet and greet service when flight information is available. The renter will be met at the departure gate of the airport by a representative of Cool Rides Rent a Car.
7. We deliver vehicles to your hotel for an additional fee
8. Third Party Protection (PLI) is mandatory.

9. Car Protection (LDW) may be declined upon presentation of a letter from the credit card company stipulating coverage in Costa Rica for the rented vehicle. As of October 1, 2021, VISA will no longer provide its Gold and Platinum cardholders with the benefit of vehicle damage coverage for rental cars in Costa Rica. Therefore, if you wish to decline our LDW coverage, you will not be able to do so with a VISA credit card. Please contact for more information.
10. Extended Protection (SPP) is optional.
11. Extra costs may apply for one way or drop off rentals. 
12. Free mileage for rentals less than 30 days.

Request, Modification, Cancellation, No Show or Early Refund of Reservations

To make a reservation, you must provide the following information:
– First and Last name
– Car Category
– Date, time and place of pick up (Hotel or Flight Number)
– Date, time and place of return (Hotel or Flight Number)
– Extra services to be included, such as: additional coverages, accessories, delivery or one way charges, drop off, etc.

Reservation Modification

A reservation can be modified up to 72 hours before the start of the rental (subject to availability) without penalty, changes related to the delivery location may incur additional costs.

Late Cancellation or No-Show

Penalty of 2 days of rental without insurance, for late cancellation 72 hours before the start of the service or for No-Show. No-Show is considered when a client is more than 2 hours late and has not informed us if he/she will arrive or not to pick up the vehicle.

Early Return
In the event that the rented vehicle is returned prior to the agreed date, a partial refund applies.

Terms of Payment
At the time of rental, you will be charged for the rent, as well as all additional extra charges.

General Conditions of Insurance and Coverage
Please refer to the Coverage Section.
Violations to the Costa Rican Traffic Legislation are full responsibility of the renter.

One Way Rentals
If you require one-way rentals, where you pick up the vehicle at our office and returns it to another location, the following conditions apply:
1. Prior reservation is required.
2. Minimum rental period: 3 days.

Additional Drivers
There is no extra charge for the renter/driver; additional drivers are charged US$4 per day per driver. In all cases drivers must be licensed for at least 2 years. The rental contract has only one named driver included.
No smoking policy
Smoking is strictly prohibited inside the vehicle. In case of any cigarette smell, a penalty of no less than $100 will be charged.


All accessories must be reserved in advance and are subject to availability.

Late returns

1 hour late return is allowed without surcharge. From 2-4 hours, charges apply; after 4 hours late, a full day’s charge applies.

Fuel Policy

All vehicles are supplied with a full tank of fuel (please check if the car uses gasoline or diesel fuel), please return as delivered.

If the vehicle is refueled with the wrong fuel, the renter must bear all costs associated with correcting the problem.

Extra charges or penalties
– Loss/theft of license plates has a replacement penalty from US$100.
– Loss/Theft/Damage of mandatory car documents has a replacement penalty from US$100.
– Lost/stolen car keys have a replacement penalty of US$150 up to US$500; if the key system is electronic or customized to the rented car, a penalty of US$300 applies.
– Penalty from US$100 for excessive soiling.
– Penalty from US$100 for smoking inside the car.
